From Sputnik in 1957 through 2012, humanity placed an average of about objects in orbit each year — a line so flat it barely registers on today's scale. Reusable rockets and satellite mega-constellations changed that. In 2025 alone, 4,510 objects went up — more than the first several decades combined.

Why believe a curve this steep? Flip to the log scale: the jump isn't a rendering artifact — annual growth since 2016 sits far above the six-decade trend on a logarithmic axis too. The drivers are well documented: SpaceX's reusable Falcon 9 (first re-flight 2017) collapsed launch costs, and Starlink began mass deployment in 2019.
